This song has been through three major evolutions since I first wrote it, eventually becoming the track you hear on this album. Its the only song we have released so far where I play my custom banjola and was recorded in a semi-live studio setting. We wanted to blend the sound of a small show with a studio record. The chorus is a unique harmonic moment that really highlights what is special about this track to us.
Lyrically it is inspired by John Steinbeck's "East of Eden" where the character Tom is romanticizing his crumbling life thinking to himself that if he can only make it to the evening, he can come home and see his pretty wife waiting under the tree for him. Ultimately that did not come to pass. At this time of my life I related to Tom, I was working in a gigantic city feeling homesick and lonely. At times I could not see an end to those blues, thinking that smog filled sky would one day eat me whole. I am glad it didn;t/
lyrics
In the evening, in the evening
I’ll no longer be alone, all the ugliness gone
In the evening
When I come home , when I come home,
she’ll be sittin by the tree, as pretty as can be
when I come home
It's been one year, since I went away,
would things have turned out any different if I’d stayed?
I tried to be, the one to forget,
Cus all these memories they cause me such pain
but I could not, just let you go,
I suppose I bet my life on chance, all I am
are we not Pawns? Emperors or fools?
a simple contradictive love, lambs and lions
ooooooooo but who are we?
ooooooooo but eyes that can’t see?
ooooooooo we can’t regret what we’ve done?
ooooooooo but I’ll be home when the evening comes.
It is not good, to be alone,
if we are all faces in crowds, flesh and bones
did we ever, leave that cave,
are we not more than a numbered pages, or souls to save
ooooooooo but who are we?
ooooooooo but eyes that can’t see?
ooooooooo we can’t regret what we’ve done?
ooooooooo but I’ll be home when the evening comes.
do we sit estranged outside this garden,
am I to be dirt once my life ends,
do we pay any mind to this royal pardon,
it seems one becomes the time he spends,
